Triumphal Arch Grove

Homepage Triumphal Arch Grove

Presentation

Of the Triumphal Arch Grove, laid out by Le Nôtre between 1677 and 1684, only the lower part remains, on the side of the Neptune Basin. It was accessed in the same way as today, so as to be able to see the entire decoration, which culminated at the top of the upper terrace in a large gilded metal triumphal arch dripping with jets and cascades. On either side, water buffets and gilded metal pyramids added to the splendor of the grove. Below, the fountain of Triumphant France, by sculptors Coysevox, Tuby and Prou, lent meaning to the whole, celebrating the King’s military victories.
