Enceladus Grove
Presentation
The Enceladus fountain was executed in lead by Gaspard Marsy between 1675 and 1677. The subject is taken from the story of the fall of the Titans, buried under the rocks of Olympus by the gods they had sought to dethrone. The sculptor has depicted the giant Enceladus half-sunken beneath a pile of rock, struggling against death and whose suffering is expressed by the powerful jet that escapes from his mouth, like a scream. The design of the grove, whose perimeter is punctuated by trellised pavilions linked by cradles, was completely altered in 1706 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, who transformed this closed space into an open crossroads by removing the trellises, small basins and original slope. A restoration program carried out between 1992 and 1998 restored the grove to its original appearance.
