The Mirror Pool was dug in 1672. It complemented the large pool of the Royal Island opposite it, now known as the Royal Garden. The two water features were separated by an alley. Playing on the difference in level, which placed the Royal Island lower than the Miroir, Le Nôtre created architectural waterfalls on the Royal Island retaining wall.
