Presentation

The King’s Garden was laid out in 1817 on the exact line of the former Royal Island Basin, dug in 1671. This basin originally served to drain the land in this part of the garden. Poorly maintained after 1789, it gradually turned into a swamp. In 1816, Louis XVIII commissioned palace architect Alexandre Dufour to fill it in and plant a landscaped garden in its place.
