The sublime entertainment Così fan tutte is presented here as a chamber opera scored for thirteen instruments, twelve wind and basso continuo, the ensemble originally used by Mozart for the Gran Partita. Voices and wind thus join in serving the composer’s brilliant inventiveness: the breath that gives life to the instruments perfectly counterpoints the living sentiments which entangle the cast of characters in a comedy that veers towards drama. This is a work which is both intimate, in its close examination of the innermost human passions, and exuberant, in its constant use of marvellously expressive ensembles marked by a joyful bent towards folly and extravagance. The audience is certain to be captivated by the novelty and freshness of the production and – as ever – enraptured by the subtle elegance of Mozart’s music as it gives voice to the full range of emotions of the human condition.
