Music for the Holy Week at the Royal Chapel
Easter week is the high point of Christian liturgy. The evocation of the Passion of Christ and the celebration of his Resurrection have given rise to a considerable musical repertoire in all of the Western world, among which many masterpieces.
The 2018 edition will give pride of place to protestant compositions: Bach’s two famous Passions, his motets (funeral music by essence) and also the Tears of Resurrection by Schütz and Schein.
The magnificence of the catholic Holy Week will be illustrated by two French masterpieces: Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres and Histoires Sacrées by Charpentier, and two Italian discoveries: Veneziano’s Passion and The Earthquake by Draghi. And the confrontation of Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Vivaldi’s Gloria will magnify their choral beauty.
For this occasion, the Royal Chapel will welcome two staged versions of these religious compositions: Sacred Stories and The Earthquake will take life, with costumes, sets and lighting; the magnificent baroque dramasperformed in the Chapel will find their true meaning and heighten emotions.
With eleven concerts, the Holy Week will resonate with the most beautiful music, thanks to Vincent Dumestre, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Jordi Savall, Ton Koopmann, Sébastien Daucé, Leonardo García Alarcón, Simon-Pierre Bestion, to the Arts Florissants, and the Tölzer Knabenchor : nine exceptional events!
