Malandain Ballet Biarritz: Beauty and the Beast

Evenings for the Malandain Ballet Biarritz 20th anniversary

Without going into all interpretations of the fairy tale, it can be read as a rite of passage aiming to resolve human duality: Beauty embodies the human soul and Beast human vital force and instincts.

With Jean Cocteau, whose film was released in 1946, our eye is drawn to the representation of the artist’s inner devils through the dual nature of the Beast.

Whatever the throes of human nature or the grief of lost oneness, the Beauty will marry the Beast, liberated from his inner devils, under bright sunshine, to the music of Tchaikovsky’s symphony.
